Daniel 6:9

Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.

Daniel 6:9 (KJV)

Daniel 6 places its reader in the Medo-Persian Empire, where Daniel, a faithful servant of God, had risen to a position of prominence. King Darius, impressed by Daniel’s wisdom and integrity, intended to set him over the whole kingdom. This favour stirred the envy of other officials, who plotted against Daniel and tricked the king into signing a decree that forbade prayer to any god or man except the king for thirty days, with the penalty of being cast into the lion’s den.

In verse 9, King Darius signs the writing and the decree, unaware of the officials’ ulterior motive. The verse highlights the weight of the king’s authority and the immediate consequences of his decision. In the Persian legal system, a decree signed by the king was unalterable, even by the king himself (cf. Daniel 6:8, 12, 15). This irreversible nature is the trap set for Daniel, and it underscores the finality of the king’s action.

The ‘writing’ likely refers to the official document, while the ‘decree’ points to its binding legal force. Darius is portrayed as a powerful but flawed ruler, whose authority is used to enforce an ungodly law. The verse emphasizes the tension between human political power and divine sovereignty. Although the king acts with absolute authority, the narrative implies that a higher authority governs the outcome. The decree, though signed by the king, was conceived in the envy and pride of his courtiers.

This moment demonstrates the power of manipulation and envy. Daniel’s integrity and close relationship with God threatened those who were envious of him, so they devised a cunning plan to exploit the king’s weaknesses. The verse serves as a reminder that earthly laws and decrees, even those with royal authority, are not the final word. The believer’s ultimate allegiance is to God, and no human edict can compel disobedience to Him.

Following the signing of the decree, Daniel’s response is recorded in the subsequent verses. Despite the law prohibiting prayer to any god or man except the king, Daniel continued his practice of praying to the Lord three times a day. This shows his unwavering commitment to his faith and his refusal to compromise his relationship with God, regardless of the consequences. The verse also shows the providence of God in allowing this decree to be signed, as it becomes the means through which God’s power and faithfulness to Daniel are spectacularly displayed.

Daniel’s steadfastness inspires believers to remain faithful to God even in the face of opposition or difficult circumstances. The story highlights the importance of discernment in identifying deceptive schemes and the need for wisdom in making decisions. We should seek God’s guidance and be discerning in our interactions with others, as not everyone may have our best interests at heart. Daniel’s commitment to prayer reveals the significance of maintaining a close relationship with God, knowing that He is the ultimate authority.

Daniel 6:9 demonstrates the power of manipulation, the consequences of ill-informed decisions, and the unwavering faith of Daniel. It encourages us to remain steadfast in our faith, exercise discernment, and depend on God through prayer, even in the face of adversity. The verse reminds us that human rulers, despite their apparent power, are subject to God’s higher authority, and that a seemingly secure human edict cannot ultimately thwart God’s purposes.
