Deuteronomy 10:20

Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.

Deuteronomy 10:20 (KJV)

Deuteronomy contains Moses’ farewell speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. This verse is part of his call for exclusive devotion, following reminders of God’s care and the command to circumcise the heart. The immediate setting shows that this loyalty is to be internal and wholehearted, not merely outward. Moses urges the people to respond to God with a fourfold commitment: fear, service, cleaving, and swearing by His name.

“Fear” here means reverential awe, deep respect, and honour for God. It is not terror, but a posture that recognises His sovereignty, majesty, and holiness, leading to obedience. “Serve” means acknowledging God’s lordship and willingly submitting to His commands, serving Him heartily, sincerely, and exclusively according to His revealed will. “Cleave” means to hold fast, cling, or remain faithful to God, not turning aside to other gods. “Swear by His name” means that when oaths are necessary, they are made in God’s name alone, not rashly or on trivial matters, and never by any creature. This verse emphasises covenant loyalty and exclusive devotion to the Lord, a devotion that is both inward and outward.

Jesus quotes this command in Matthew 4:10 and Luke 4:8 when He rebukes Satan, showing that fearing, serving, and cleaving to God alone is directly applicable to resisting temptation and worshipping God exclusively. This connection confirms that the call to exclusive devotion remains central for believers.

Deuteronomy 10:20 calls believers today to a life of wholehearted devotion. It invites us to:

  • Cultivate reverential awe of God, acknowledging His authority and holiness.

  • Serve God wholeheartedly, offering our lives as living sacrifices and following His commandments.

  • Cling to God, seeking a close and intimate relationship with Him through prayer, worship, and studying His Word.

  • Make commitments and promises in God’s presence with integrity, recognising the sacredness of His name.

This verse encourages a life of devotion, obedience, and loyalty to God, recognising His supremacy and honouring Him in all things. When tempted to divide our loyalty, we can remember that God alone deserves our fear, service, and trust. Our daily choices, words, and even our promises should reflect this exclusive commitment.

Consider what competes for your devotion. This verse calls for a single-hearted allegiance to God, not a divided one. Let the fear of the Lord shape your choices, and let your service flow from love. Cleave to Him daily, and let your words and promises reflect His holiness. In a world of many loyalties, this ancient call still directs us to the one true God.
