Deuteronomy 18:15
The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
Deuteronomy 18:15 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. He reminds them of God’s covenant, the need to obey His commands, and the results of disobedience. This verse comes after God forbids the nations’ occult practices, showing that He instead provides a true way to know His will.
Meaning
Moses promises that God will raise up a Prophet from among the Israelites. The phrase “like unto me” means this Prophet will be a mediator between God and the people, receiving and delivering divine revelation. The singular “a Prophet” points to one specific person, not a series of prophets. The command “unto him ye shall hearken” stresses the serious duty to listen and obey this coming messenger.
Biblical connections
The New Testament identifies Jesus as this Prophet. In Acts 3:22-23, Peter quotes Moses’ words and declares that Jesus fulfills them, urging the people to hear Him. Stephen also refers to this prophecy in Acts 7:37. Jesus, born into Israel’s lineage, displayed a ministry with remarkable parallels to Moses, including signs, teaching, and intercession for the people.
Application
God took the initiative to provide a mediator because people cannot approach Him on their own. Today, believers are called to hear Jesus, who speaks God’s truth with authority. Listening means more than hearing; it requires trusting and obeying His words. This prophecy assures us that God always makes a way for His people to know and follow Him.
Reflection
How seriously do we treat the words of Jesus? The command to hearken remains for every generation. Recognizing Jesus as the promised Prophet deepens our gratitude for God’s provision and strengthens our commitment to follow Him faithfully.
