Deuteronomy 5:22
These words the Lord spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
Deuteronomy 5:22 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. In this chapter, Moses recounts the giving of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. The people had gathered to hear God’s voice, and what happened there was not a private event. God spoke directly to the whole assembly, showing that His covenant was with every Israelite, not only with leaders or priests.
Meaning
God spoke from the midst of fire, cloud, and thick darkness, with a great voice. These signs made His presence both awesome and holy. The people could not mistake the source of the words they heard. The phrase “he added no more” means the Ten Commandments were complete and final at that time. God gave exactly what He intended, and nothing further was added.
God then wrote these words on two tables of stone and gave them to Moses. The stone shows the lasting and serious nature of His law. The tablets were a physical sign of the covenant between God and His people. Moses received them as the mediator between God and Israel, standing between the holy God and the people who were afraid.
Biblical connections
Moses’ role as mediator points to Jesus Christ, the ultimate mediator who fulfills the law. The law written on stone was enduring, but the New Testament teaches that God’s Spirit writes His law on human hearts. This does not remove the law’s importance; it deepens it. The same God who spoke at Sinai now speaks through His Son and His Word.
Application
Deuteronomy 5:22 reminds us that the Ten Commandments come from God, not from human ideas. They guide us in loving God and loving others. Because God’s law is unchanging, we should let it shape our lives daily. We are called to honor His commandments with reverence and obedience.
Just as Israel received God’s Word, we also receive His Word today. We respond by trusting and following Him. The commandments are not a burden but a gift that shows us how to walk in His ways.
Reflection
God spoke directly to His people, and He still speaks through His Word. The law written on stone points to our need for the Spirit to write truth on our hearts. Let us respond with humble obedience and grateful hearts, knowing that the God who spoke at Sinai is the same God who speaks to us today.
