Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Context

Ephesians 6:14 belongs to the passage commonly called the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20). The apostle Paul pictures the believer as a soldier preparing for spiritual battle. The command to “stand therefore” follows the call to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10). The armor is not for display but for standing against the schemes of the devil.

Meaning

The first piece of armor is the belt of truth. In Roman dress, a soldier tucked his long garments into a belt so he could move freely and fight effectively. Truth here is not merely factual accuracy but sincerity, integrity, and faithfulness to the gospel. It is the foundation that holds the rest of the armor together. The second piece is the breastplate of righteousness, which protects the heart and vital organs. This righteousness is both a gift and a calling: it is the righteousness of Christ imputed to the believer, and it is the practical righteousness that flows from a life of faith. It guards the center of our affections and will.

Biblical connections

The righteousness that protects the believer is not self-righteousness but the righteousness that comes from God through faith (Philippians 3:9). Because we are in Christ, we have truth and righteousness as our defense; this identity is the basis for standing firm.

Application

Believers are called to stand, not retreat, because the victory has already been secured by Christ. This standing requires a deliberate, active posture of readiness. We put on the belt of truth by studying and embracing God’s Word, allowing it to shape our beliefs and actions. We put on the breastplate of righteousness by living with integrity and moral uprightness, relying on the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Truth and righteousness are not merely external protections but internal realities that shape character and conduct. One without the other leaves us vulnerable, so we must pursue both daily.
