Ephesians 6:15

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Ephesians 6:15 (KJV)

Ephesians 6:15 belongs to the larger passage often called the “Armor of God” (Ephesians 6:10-18). In this section, the apostle Paul urges believers to put on the whole armor of God so they can stand against spiritual battles and resist the schemes of the devil. The verse uses the analogy of a Roman soldier’s footwear to illustrate an essential aspect of spiritual readiness. Just as a soldier’s feet needed to be protected and prepared for battle, so believers must be ready to stand firm in their faith and proclaim the gospel.

The phrase “preparation of the gospel of peace” refers to being ready and equipped to share the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. As followers of Christ, we are called to be messengers of peace and reconciliation. Our readiness to proclaim the gospel is a crucial part of our spiritual armor.

The gospel is the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. It is a message of reconciliation between God and humanity, offering peace to those who believe. By having our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, we are ready to bring the message of hope and reconciliation to a broken world.

Peace is a vital component of the gospel message. It encompasses both the inner peace we experience through our relationship with God and the peace we are called to share with others. By proclaiming the gospel of peace, we contribute to the healing and restoration of individuals and communities.

The “preparation” of the gospel does not primarily denote a readiness to preach, receive, or profess the gospel, nor a readiness to endure reproach for it. Rather, it refers to the readiness that the gospel itself produces, equipping believers for every good work and for the spiritual warfare described in the passage. The imagery of feet being “shod” or “fitted” emphasizes being prepared to move swiftly and effectively, suggesting that the believer’s readiness comes from the gospel of peace itself. This readiness is not a human achievement but a divine provision, enabling the believer to stand firm and take action in spiritual conflict.

Ephesians 6:15 encourages believers to be actively engaged in sharing the gospel and being ambassadors of peace. It reminds us of the importance of being prepared and ready to articulate our faith. We should strive to deepen our understanding of the gospel message and actively seek opportunities to share it with others, both in word and deed.
