Historical Context:The book of Esther takes place during the reign of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) of Persia. Esther, a Jewish girl, becomes the queen of Persia through a series of events orchestrated by God’s providence. Haman, the king’s advisor, plots to annihilate the Jewish people, and Esther’s cousin Mordecai urges her to intervene.

Esther’s Dilemma:In the preceding verses, Mordecai sends a message to Esther, revealing Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews and urging her to approach the king to seek his favour. However, approaching the king without being summoned was a punishable offence, even for the queen. Esther initially hesitates, fearing for her own life.

Mordecai’s Response:In verse 17, Mordecai responds obediently to Esther’s request. He goes his way and fulfils all that Esther commanded him. This verse portrays Mordecai’s willingness to trust in God’s plan, acknowledging that Esther’s intervention is crucial in saving their people.

• God’s Sovereignty:The events in the book of Esther highlight God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through seemingly ordinary circumstances and individuals to accomplish His purposes. Mordecai’s trust in God’s plan and Esther’s obedience demonstrate their reliance on God’s providence.

Application:

• Trust God’s Plan:Like Mordecai, we should trust in God’s plan for our lives, even when circumstances seem uncertain or challenging. He orchestrates events in ways we may not fully understand, but His plans are always for our good (Romans 8:28).
• Act with Courage:Esther’s courage in approaching the king despite the risks serves as an example for us. When faced with difficult decisions or situations, we can draw strength from God and step out in faith, knowing that He is with us.
• Embrace Unity:Mordecai and Esther’s unity reminds us of the importance of working together as believers. We should support and encourage one another, seeking to fulfil God’s purposes collectively.
• Recognise God’s Sovereignty:The story of Esther reminds us that God is in control, even when it seems like evil is prevailing. Trusting in His sovereignty brings peace and assurance in the midst of uncertainty.
