Esther 9:8

And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,

Esther 9:8 (KJV)

Esther 9:8 names three of Haman’s ten sons: Poratha, Adalia, and Aridatha. The verse belongs to the account of the Jews’ victory in Susa on the day appointed for their destruction. The surrounding passage, Esther 9:7-10, records that the Jews slew these ten sons along with five hundred men, but did not take any plunder.

The listing of these names is a historical record of judgment. Haman had plotted to destroy the Jews, but his own house was completely defeated. The mention of each son by name emphasizes the completeness of that defeat and the full reversal of Haman’s scheme.

This event fulfills the deliverance God provided for His people, even though His name is not explicitly mentioned in the book of Esther. The Jews were authorized to defend themselves, and they did so, but they refrained from taking spoil. That restraint shows their focus on survival rather than personal gain, and it highlights the themes of divine justice and the overturning of evil plans.

Readers can see that God works through real historical events to protect His people. The record of these names reminds us that no enemy of God’s people can finally succeed. It also calls believers to respond with restraint and trust, rather than seeking personal advantage when God grants victory.

Consider how God’s providence may be at work in ordinary and difficult circumstances, even when His presence is not obvious. The defeat of Haman’s sons shows that evil schemes are overturned by God’s power, and that His people can rely on Him to bring justice in His time.
