Exodus 28:5

And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.

Exodus 28:5 (KJV)

Exodus 28 gives Moses detailed instructions for making the sacred garments of Aaron the high priest and his sons. These clothes were not ordinary. They set the priests apart for service in the tabernacle, the place where God met His people. In this verse, God commands the Israelites to bring five costly materials: gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen. The people themselves were to contribute these precious items, showing their active part in worship and their reverence for God’s presence.

Each material carried a clear symbolic meaning. Gold, a precious metal, speaks of purity, divinity, and the glory of God. It reminded the priests that their service was holy and set apart. Blue, the color of the sky, pointed to heaven and the divine nature of God. It kept the priests mindful of their heavenly calling. Purple, a color linked to royalty, showed the honor and authority God gave to the priesthood. Scarlet, a deep red, brought to mind blood and sacrifice. It reminded the priests of the need for atonement for sin and their role in interceding for the people. Fine linen, a high-quality fabric, represented righteousness and purity. Together, these materials formed a visual language of holiness. They declared that the God of Israel is glorious, royal, and holy, and that approaching Him requires the best we can offer.

These same qualities find their perfect fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the ultimate High Priest. He embodies divine glory, royalty, sacrifice, and righteousness in full measure. The earthly garments pointed beyond the tabernacle to the heavenly reality of Christ’s perfect mediation. Believers also share in this priestly calling. As 1 Peter 2:9 teaches, those who follow Christ are a royal priesthood, chosen and set apart to serve God. The colors and materials of the high priest’s garments remind us that this calling is both a privilege and a responsibility.

The way the Israelites gave their best materials teaches us about worship. God does not ask for leftovers or careless offerings. He deserves our finest, offered according to His design. This principle applies to our time, talents, and resources. We honor God when we serve Him with excellence and sincerity. The blue in the garments also encourages us to keep a heavenly focus. As Colossians 3:2 says, we are to set our minds on things above while carrying out our earthly duties. The scarlet reminds us of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. We embrace His atonement and live in a way that reflects His love. The fine linen calls us to pursue purity and holiness in our daily lives, knowing that God has set us apart for Himself.

Exodus 28:5 is more than a list of materials. It reveals the heart of God, who desires a people marked by holiness, reverence, and wholehearted devotion. The high priest’s garments were beautiful, but their true beauty lay in what they represented: a holy God dwelling among a redeemed people. As we consider these materials, we are invited to examine our own lives. Do we offer God our best? Do we live with a heavenly focus? Do we embrace the sacrifice of Christ and walk in righteousness? The God who gave such detailed care for the priestly garments also cares for the details of our walk with Him. He calls us to be holy, just as He is holy, and to serve Him with joy and honor.
