Ezekiel 38:10
Thus saith the Lord God; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
Ezekiel 38:10 (KJV)
Context
Ezekiel 38 is a prophecy concerning a future invasion of Israel by a coalition of nations led by Gog. The chapter describes events that will take place in the “latter years” or “later days,” indicating a time yet to come. In verse 10 the Lord God addresses Gog directly, declaring that He knows what is in Gog’s mind and that an evil thought will arise.
Meaning
The Lord God’s words emphasize His omniscience and sovereignty. He declares that He foreknows the thoughts and schemes of Gog, showing that nothing can be hidden from Him. This divine knowledge demonstrates that God is able to foresee and control future events, even the inner intentions of individuals who oppose His people.
The phrase “think an evil thought” refers to the malevolent intentions that Gog will develop against Israel. While the verse does not detail the exact nature of the evil thought, the surrounding verses describe Gog’s desire to plunder, attack, and bring devastation upon Israel. The thought is hostile and reflects Gog’s opposition to God’s people.
The verse also reveals that God sees the thoughts and intents of the heart, a truth echoed elsewhere in Scripture (1 Chronicles 28:9; Psalm 139:2). The expression “things come into thy mind” indicates that God, in His sovereign governance, brings these thoughts to the enemy’s mind—not as the author of evil, but as the Lord who uses even the wicked devices of men to accomplish His purposes. Human plans, even evil ones, remain under God’s control and serve to fulfill His divine decree.
Despite Gog’s malicious designs, the prophecy makes clear that God’s ultimate purpose will prevail. The invasion will become an occasion for God to display His power, protect His people, and bring judgment upon the invading nations. God will use the event to demonstrate His justice and to fulfill the divine plan revealed in Ezekiel 38‑39.
Application
Ezekiel 38:10 reminds believers of God’s all‑knowing nature and His sovereign control over world affairs. It encourages trust in God’s wisdom and timing, even when faced with the evil intentions of others. The passage assures that God’s plans will ultimately succeed and that His justice will be executed in perfect timing.
This verse also calls readers to examine their own hearts, knowing that God weighs the thoughts and motives (Proverbs 16:2). Evil intentions are not merely private matters but are subject to divine scrutiny. For the believer, this is both a sobering warning and a comfort: no plan formed against God’s people will ultimately succeed, and God’s sovereign governance extends over all events, including the malicious schemes of the wicked.
