Hebrews 11:10

“For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

Hebrews 11:10: is a verse from the New Testament book of Hebrews, which is often referred to as the "Hall of Faith" chapter. In this chapter, the author highlights the faith of various Old Testament figures and how their trust in God led to their righteous actions.

In verse 10, the author refers to Abraham, who is recognized as the father of faith. Abraham left his homeland and followed God’s command to go to a land that He would show him. This verse specifically emphasizes Abraham’s anticipation and longing for a city with foundations whose builder and maker is God.

The phrase "city which hath foundations" is metaphorical and signifies a permanent and unshakable dwelling place. It implies a sense of security and stability that is lacking in the temporary nature of earthly cities. Abraham looked forward to a city that was divinely constructed, built by God Himself.

Abraham’s anticipation of this city demonstrates his faith and trust in God’s promises. Throughout his life, Abraham experienced ups and downs, faced challenges and trials, but he held onto his faith in God’s covenant. He believed that God would fulfill His promises and provide a permanent inheritance, not only for him but for future generations as well.

The verse in Hebrews 11:10 encourages believers to have a similar mindset as Abraham. It reminds us to set our sights on the eternal and to place our hope and trust in God, who is the ultimate architect and maker of all things. It challenges us to prioritize the spiritual over the temporal, seeking a lasting relationship with God and a heavenly dwelling rather than pursuing earthly possessions or temporary pleasures.

Furthermore, this verse points to the ultimate fulfillment of Abraham’s longing in the heavenly city described in the book of Revelation. The New Jerusalem, as depicted in Revelation 21, is portrayed as a glorious city descending from heaven, prepared as a dwelling place for God’s people. It represents the culmination of God’s redemptive plan, where believers will experience the fullness of His presence and enjoy eternal fellowship with Him.
