Hebrews 12:1
Context:Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and struggling to maintain their faith. The author encourages them to persevere and remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ.
The Great Cloud of Witnesses:The passage begins by referring to “so great a cloud of witnesses.” This refers to the heroes of faith mentioned in the previous chapter (Hebrews 11), who lived by faith and endured various trials. Their lives serve as examples and encouragement for believers to continue in their faith journey.
Lay Aside Every Weight:The author exhorts believers to “lay aside every weight.” In the context of a race, athletes would remove any unnecessary garments or accessories that could slow them down. The Sin Which Easily Besets Us:In addition to laying aside every weight, the passage specifically mentions “the sin which doth so easily beset us.” Each person may have different besetting sins or areas of weakness that tend to entangle and hinder their spiritual progress.
