Hebrews 11:11
“Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.”
Context:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians to encourage and strengthen their faith. Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” or “Faith’s Hall of Fame” because it lists many examples of Old Testament figures who demonstrated great faith in God.
Understanding the verse:
- “Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed”:This verse refers to the faith of Sarah, the wife of Abraham. Sarah had been barren, unable to conceive a child, but through her faith, God enabled her to conceive and bear a child in her old age. This emphasizes that faith plays a significant role in God’s miraculous works.
- “And was delivered of a child when she was past age”:Sarah’s faith was rewarded when she gave birth to Isaac, the child of promise, in her old age. This further highlights the miraculous nature of Sarah’s pregnancy and birth.
- “Because she judged him faithful who had promised”:Sarah’s faith was grounded in her conviction that God is faithful and will fulfill His promises. She trusted in God’s character and believed that He would do what He had promised, even though it seemed unlikely or impossible from a human perspective.
- Lessons we can learn:
- The power of faith:Sarah’s story demonstrates the power of faith in God. Despite her physical limitations and the natural impossibility of conceiving a child at an advanced age, her faith in God’s faithfulness and His promise sustained her. It serves as a reminder that with faith, nothing is impossible for God.
- Trusting in God’s promises:Sarah’s faith was based on her confidence in God’s trustworthiness. Even though circumstances seemed unfavorable, she believed that God would keep His word. We can learn from her example and trust in God’s promises, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill what He has spoken.
- God’s timing is perfect:Sarah’s story teaches us that God’s timing is not bound by human limitations. He works in His own time and accomplishes His purposes according to His perfect plan. Even when things seem delayed or impossible, we can trust that God’s timing is always perfect.
Application:
- Strengthening our faith:We can strengthen our faith by studying God’s Word, meditating on His promises, and remembering the ways He has been faithful in the past. This will help us develop a deep trust in Him and His faithfulness.
- Trusting God in impossible situations:When facing challenges or circumstances that seem impossible, we can learn from Sarah’s example and choose to trust in God’s faithfulness. Instead of focusing on the limitations of our circumstances, we can focus on the limitless power and faithfulness of our God.
- Patience and perseverance:Sarah’s story also teaches us the importance of patience and perseverance. God’s timing may not align with our expectations, but we can trust that He is working behind the scenes. We should remain steadfast in our faith, even when we don’t see immediate results.
Remember, Hebrews 11:11 highlights Sarah’s faith and encourages us to have faith in God’s promises, trust His faithfulness, and remain patient as we wait for His perfect timing.
