Hebrews 12:14

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Hebrews 12:14 (KJV)

Hebrews 12 gathers a series of urgent exhortations for believers who are running the race of faith. The writer urges endurance under trial, submission to the Father’s discipline, and the strengthening of weak hands and feeble knees. The command to pursue peace and holiness is part of this practical appeal for a faithful communal life.

The Greek word translated “follow” implies active, persistent pursuit, not passive waiting. Believers are to chase after peace with all people—in natural, domestic, civil, and spiritual relationships, including fellow church members and even enemies, as far as it depends on them. This peace is not passive avoidance of disagreement; it involves seeking reconciliation, refusing needless hostility, and acting justly. Yet peace must remain joined to truth; the verse does not require agreement with sin or the abandonment of holiness.

Holiness means being set apart to God and increasingly conformed to His character, involving moral purity and righteousness. The statement that no one shall see the Lord without holiness does not teach salvation by moral achievement. Hebrews presents access to God through Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice, while also insisting that saving grace produces a transformed life. The pursuit of peace and holiness is the necessary evidence of genuine faith and the path to seeing the Lord.

This verse echoes Jesus’ teaching that peacemakers are blessed (Matthew 5:9) and Paul’s instruction to live peaceably with all (Romans 12:18). The call to holiness is a central biblical theme, and the phrase “see the Lord” points to the ultimate hope of believers—beholding God in His glory.

Christians should examine both their relationships and their conduct. A profession of faith that cherishes bitterness or refuses every call to obedience contradicts the direction of the gospel. Dependence upon Christ, attention to God’s word, repentance, and mutual encouragement help believers pursue peace without compromise and holiness without self-righteousness.

This verse is a serious warning against neglecting these pursuits. The promise of seeing the Lord is held out to those who actively follow peace and holiness, not as a reward for human effort, but as the fruit of a life transformed by grace.
