Jeremiah 33:16

In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.

Jeremiah 33:16 (KJV)

Jeremiah spoke God’s messages to the people of Judah during a time of impending Babylonian exile, warning them of the consequences of their sins and calling them to repentance. In this verse, he delivers a message of hope and restoration, assuring the people that a time will come when Judah and Jerusalem will be saved and dwell safely.

The verse begins by stating that “In those days shall Judah be saved.” “Those days” refers to a future time of restoration and redemption. God promises to save His people from their enemies, restore their land, and bring them back into a place of safety and security. This promise is both physical and spiritual: physical deliverance from enemies and exile, and spiritual salvation from sin and its consequences.

The verse continues by mentioning the name by which Jerusalem will be called, “The Lord our righteousness.” In Hebrew, the name is “Yahweh Tsidkenu,” which emphasises God’s righteousness and His role as the source of righteousness for His people. This name signifies the transformation that will take place in the people of Jerusalem and reflects the character of God and His redemptive work.

The name “The Lord our righteousness” speaks to the nature and character of God. It emphasises that true righteousness can only come from God Himself. It is not something that can be achieved by human efforts alone but is bestowed upon those who trust in Him. Through faith in God, His people are declared righteous and are able to live in alignment with His will.

This title echoes Jeremiah 23:6, where the same name is applied to the righteous Branch, the Messiah, indicating a direct connection between the coming King and the salvation of God’s people. Through faith in Christ, believers are made righteous before God, as Paul affirms that Christ is made unto us righteousness (1 Corinthians 1:30).

  • Trust in God’s Promises: Just as God assured the people of Judah of their salvation and safety, we can trust in God’s promises for our lives. He is faithful to fulfil His Word and bring about restoration and deliverance in His perfect timing.

  • Dependence on God’s Righteousness: We are reminded that our righteousness comes from God alone. We cannot earn it by our own efforts, but it is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we should seek to live in righteousness, relying on God’s strength and guidance.

  • Secure in God’s Name: As believers in Christ, we bear His name and have the assurance of our eternal security. We can find peace and safety in knowing that our salvation is secured by the righteousness of Christ and His finished work on the cross.

  • Proclaim God’s Righteousness: Just as Jerusalem was called “The Lord our righteousness,” we are called to be witnesses of God’s righteousness to the world. Through our words and actions, we can point others to the righteousness found in Christ and the salvation He offers.

The promise of safety and salvation in this verse is not merely temporal but points to the eternal security found in the Messiah. The name given to Jerusalem reflects the character of God and His redemptive work. As believers, we can find peace and safety in knowing that our salvation is secured by the righteousness of Christ and His finished work on the cross.
