Jeremiah 42:17

Listen to this article

“So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.”

Context:Jeremiah 42 records a significant event during the time of Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry when a group of people, including military leaders and others, approached Jeremiah seeking guidance from God. They had just witnessed the fall of Jerusalem and were afraid of retaliation from the Babylonian king. The people requested Jeremiah to inquire of the Lord on their behalf, promising to obey whatever message God revealed.

Study:

Seeking God’s guidance:The people in this passage sought Jeremiah’s intercession before God. It’s commendable that they recognized the need to seek divine guidance in their uncertain situation. This teaches us the importance of seeking God’s will in our lives through prayer and seeking wise counsel.

Trusting God’s response:The people explicitly promised to obey whatever message God revealed through Jeremiah. This demonstrates their initial willingness to follow God’s leading. It highlights the importance of having a heart that is open and obedient to God’s direction.

Warning against disobedience:In response to their inquiry, God warned the people against going to Egypt. Egypt was a symbol of reliance on human strength and worldly power rather than trusting in God. By choosing to go there, the people would be rejecting God’s guidance and placing their trust in a foreign nation. God warned them that if they went to Egypt, they would face the consequences of death, either by the sword, famine, or pestilence. This stern warning emphasizes the severity of their disobedience and the certainty of the judgment that would follow.

God’s faithfulness and justice:While the message was harsh, it reflects God’s faithfulness in warning the people of the impending judgment. God is just and cannot ignore disobedience. He had warned the people through Jeremiah of the consequences of their actions and gave them an opportunity to repent and turn back to Him. However, their decision to go against God’s counsel would ultimately lead to their destruction.

Lessons for us:This passage reminds us of the importance of seeking and obeying God’s guidance in our lives. It warns against relying on our own wisdom or the strength of the world rather than trusting in God’s leading. It also teaches us the consequences of disobedience and the need to take God’s warnings seriously.

  • Remember, it is essential to read the Bible in its entirety to fully grasp the context and meaning of any specific passage. This study provides an overview of Jeremiah 42:17, but there is much more depth to explore in the book of Jeremiah as a whole.
