John 12:36

Posted on 18 May at 14:36
Listen to this article

“While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.”

Context: The Gospel of John focuses on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. In John 12, we find Jesus entering Jerusalem before the Passover, and there is a growing tension among the religious leaders who are plotting to kill Him. In this verse, Jesus speaks about the importance of believing in the light.

“While ye have light”:Jesus often used metaphors to convey spiritual truths, and here He refers to Himself as the light. He had been teaching and performing miracles, revealing the truth of God’s kingdom to the people. Jesus is the light of the world, and while He was physically present, He brought the light of salvation and truth to those who believed in Him.

“Believe in the light”:Jesus emphasizes the necessity of belief in Him. Believing in Jesus involves acknowledging Him as the Son of God, the Messiah, and putting one’s trust in Him for salvation. It is not merely intellectual assent but a personal surrender and reliance on Him for forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

“That ye may be the children of light”:Believing in the light makes us children of light. As children of light, we are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, and our lives should reflect the character of Christ. We are called to live as people who have been enlightened by the truth, demonstrating love, righteousness, and obedience to God.

Jesus departs and hides Himself:After speaking these words, Jesus departs and hides Himself from the people. This action serves as a reminder of the people’s rejection of Him and the impending darkness that would come when He is crucified. Jesus’ departure signifies a turning point in His ministry, where the emphasis shifts to His sacrificial death and the fulfillment of God’s plan for redemption.

Application:

  • Believe in Jesus:This verse reminds us of the importance of personal faith in Jesus Christ. We must acknowledge Him as our Savior, trust in His work on the cross, and commit our lives to Him.
  • Walk as children of light:As believers, we are called to live differently, reflecting the light of Christ in our words and actions. We should strive to live in obedience to God’s Word, walking in love, truth, and righteousness.
  • Embrace the light while it is available:Jesus’ physical presence is no longer with us, but the light of His truth and salvation is still available to us through the Scriptures and the indwelling Holy Spirit. We should seize the opportunity to believe in and follow Him, making the most of our time on earth.

Remember that the study of God’s Word is a lifelong journey, and there is always more to learn and apply to our lives. May the study of John 12:36 deepen your understanding of Jesus as the light of the world and inspire you to walk as a child of light.
