Listen to this article

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

Context:John 14 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples. He prepares them for His departure and assures them of His continued presence through the Holy Spirit. In verse 26, Jesus promises the coming of the Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit) as the Comforter who will teach and remind them of His teachings.

The Comforter:Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Comforter. The term “Comforter” is translated from the Greek word “Parakletos,” which means “one called alongside to help” or “counselor.” The Holy Spirit is portrayed as a divine helper, advocate, and encourager, who provides comfort, guidance, and support to believers.

Sent by the Father:Jesus emphasizes that the Holy Spirit will be sent by the Father. The sending of the Holy Spirit is part of God’s plan and purpose for the disciples and all believers. It demonstrates the Father’s love, care, and provision for His people.

Teaching:Jesus assures His disciples that the Holy Spirit will teach them all things. This teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit is multifaceted. It involves illuminating the Scriptures, revealing spiritual truths, convicting of sin, guiding believers in righteousness, and enabling them to understand and apply God’s Word.

Bringing to Remembrance:The Holy Spirit will bring to the disciples’ remembrance everything that Jesus has said to them. This aspect of the Holy Spirit’s work ensures that the disciples accurately remember and understand Jesus’ teachings. It also highlights the Holy Spirit’s role in helping believers recall and apply God’s Word in their lives.

Personal Application:John 14:26 holds significant implications for believers today. It assures us that the Holy Spirit, as the Comforter, is present with us, guiding and teaching us. We can rely on the Holy Spirit to provide wisdom, understanding, and insight as we seek to know and follow God’s will. The Holy Spirit’s work extends beyond the disciples to all believers, emphasizing the ongoing relevance and importance of this promise.

  • Application for the Church:The promise of the Holy Spirit’s teaching and guidance is not limited to the original disciples but extends to the Church as a whole. The Holy Spirit empowers and equips the Church to fulfill its mission of spreading the Gospel and making disciples. The Holy Spirit’s presence enables believers to live according to Christ’s teachings and be effective witnesses for Him.

In summary, John 14:26 highlights the promise of the Holy Spirit as the Comforter, who will teach and remind believers of Jesus’ teachings. This promise assures us of God’s ongoing presence, guidance, and support in our lives through the Holy Spirit. As we yield to the Holy Spirit and depend on His teaching ministry, we can experience a deeper understanding of God’s Word and live in accordance with His will.
