John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Context

John 14:27 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples, spoken during the Last Supper. Jesus was preparing them for His impending crucifixion, death, and resurrection. He knew their hearts were troubled and fearful at the thought of His departure, so He promised them a specific gift: His peace.

Meaning

Jesus distinguishes the peace He gives from the peace the world offers. The world’s peace is temporary, circumstantial, and dependent on external factors. The peace Jesus gives is lasting, spiritual, and independent of circumstances. It is rooted in a relationship with God and is a gift, not something earned. This peace is available to all who trust in Him.

Jesus’ words are both a promise and a command: “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” He acknowledges that trouble and fear are part of life, but He encourages His disciples not to let their hearts be troubled or afraid. This does not mean we will never face challenges or experience fear, but it means that even in the midst of trials, we can find peace in Jesus. His peace is a present reality, not just a future hope, and it is sufficient for the trials His followers face.

Application

To experience the peace Jesus gives, seek a personal relationship with Him through faith. Surrender your life to Him, trust in His finished work on the cross, and invite Him to be the Lord of your life.

Trust in His promises by meditating on God’s Word and reminding yourself of Jesus’ words. Seek His peace in prayer, especially when trouble and fear arise.

Abide in Him through regular prayer, reading and studying the Bible, and fellowship with other believers. The more we abide in Him, the more we will experience His peace.
