John 14:27
Context:John 14:27 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples, which took place during the Last Supper. Jesus was preparing them for His impending crucifixion, death, and resurrection. In this particular verse, Jesus assures His disciples that He is leaving them with peace.
Peace that Jesus gives:Jesus distinguishes the peace He gives from the peace that the world offers. The peace the world gives is temporary, circumstantial, and often dependent on external factors. However, the peace Jesus gives is lasting, spiritual, and independent of external circumstances. It is a peace that surpasses human understanding (Philippians 4:7) and is rooted in a relationship with God.
Jesus as the source of peace:Jesus, as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), is the ultimate source of peace. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Jesus conquered sin and death through His sacrificial death on the cross, and through faith in Him, we can experience inner peace that transcends any difficulties we may face in the world.
Peace amidst trouble:Jesus acknowledges that trouble and fear are part of life. However, He encourages His disciples (and us) not to let their hearts be troubled or afraid. This does not mean that we will never face challenges or experience fear, but it means that even in the midst of trials, we can find peace in Jesus. He is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1) and promises to be with us always (Matthew 28:20).
Practical application:– Seek a relationship with Jesus: To experience the peace that Jesus gives, it is essential to have a personal relationship with Him through faith. Surrender your life to Him, trust in His finished work on the cross, and invite Him to be the Lord of your life.
– Trust in His promises: Meditate on the promises of God’s Word and trust in His faithfulness. Remind yourself of Jesus’ words and seek His peace in prayer.
– Abide in Him: Stay connected to Jesus through regular prayer, reading and studying the Bible, and fellowship with other believers. The more we abide in Him, the more we will experience His peace.
Remember, John 14:27 serves as a reminder that true and lasting peace can only be found in Jesus. May this verse inspire and encourage you to seek His peace in all areas of your life.
