John 14:25

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

John 14:25 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words in the upper room during the Last Supper, as part of His farewell discourse to the disciples. In the preceding verses, He comforts them by promising to prepare a place for them and by declaring that He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:1-6). He explains that knowing Him means knowing the Father (John 14:7-14) and promises to send the Holy Spirit as a Helper, assuring them that He will not leave them as orphans (John 14:15-24).

In John 14:25, Jesus emphasizes that the things He has spoken to His disciples were given while He was still physically present with them. The phrase “these things” refers to the teachings, instructions, and promises He has just delivered—His identity as the way, the truth, and the life, the revelation of the Father through Him, and the promise of the Spirit. The phrase “being yet present with you” underscores the immediacy and weight of His words: He is speaking directly to them before His impending departure. This verse highlights Jesus’ role as a teacher who communicated essential truths during His earthly ministry, and it prepares the disciples for the transition to the Spirit’s ongoing work.

This verse points forward to John 14:26, where Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will teach them all things and bring to remembrance all that He has said. The connection shows that Jesus’ spoken words were not meant to be forgotten after His departure; the Spirit would continue to remind and instruct the disciples. This also sets the stage for the Spirit’s work in the lives of all believers, as the teachings of Jesus are preserved in Scripture and applied by the Spirit.

Although Jesus spoke these words to His disciples at that time, they also hold relevance for us today. The teachings of Jesus, preserved in the Bible, are applicable to all believers. Just as the disciples were instructed by Jesus, we are called to study and meditate on His teachings, finding guidance, comfort, and wisdom in His words. The fact that Jesus personally shared these teachings before His departure gives us confidence in their authenticity and reliability. We can trust the words of Jesus because He was the Son of God and spoke with divine authority. As we read and study the Scriptures, we can be assured of the truthfulness and relevance of Jesus’ teachings in our lives.

John 14:25 reminds us of the foundation of Jesus’ spoken words and their enduring relevance for His followers. It assures us that the teachings we have in Scripture are not mere human ideas but the very words of the Son of God. As we rely on the Holy Spirit to remind us of these truths, we can live with confidence and hope, knowing that Jesus has prepared a place for us and that His words will never pass away.
