Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

Context
John 20:16 is part of the post-resurrection account where Mary Magdalene encounters Jesus at the tomb. Mary had gone to the tomb early in the morning and found it empty. Distraught and weeping, she encounters a man whom she initially does not recognize as Jesus.
Jesus addresses Mary by name, saying, “Mary.” This simple act of calling her name captures her attention, and in that moment, she recognizes Jesus. It is a powerful reminder that Jesus knows us personally and calls us by name. He desires a personal relationship with each one of us.
When Mary realizes it is Jesus, she responds by calling Him “Rabboni,” which means “Master” or “Teacher.” It reflects her acknowledgment of Jesus’ authority and position as her Lord. Mary’s response demonstrates her love, devotion, and submission to Jesus as her Master and Teacher.
Meaning
The name “Rabboni” is an Aramaic title of honor and respect for a teacher, literally meaning “my great master.” Jewish teachers were given titles in three forms: Rab (master, the lowest honor), Rabbi (my master), and Rabboni (my great master, the highest honor). Mary’s use of this title shows her recognition of Jesus’ authority and her reverence for Him.
Mary’s turning toward Jesus is both physical and spiritual, symbolizing conversion and faith. This encounter is a model of personal relationship with the risen Christ: He calls, we respond.
Biblical connections
This personal calling echoes Jesus’ teaching in John 10:3-4, where the Shepherd calls His own sheep by name and they know His voice. Mary’s recognition of Jesus’ voice after He calls her name fulfills this picture of the Good Shepherd’s intimate care for His flock.
Application
Cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus: Take time to seek and recognize Jesus’ presence in your life. Spend time in prayer, read and meditate on the Scriptures, and listen for His voice. Seek intimacy with Him, knowing that He knows you by name.
Be open to God’s revelation: Be attentive to how God is speaking to you. Through His Word, the Holy Spirit, or circumstances, God can reveal Himself and His plans for your life. Stay open and receptive to His leading.
Surrender to Jesus’ lordship: Reflect on areas of your life where you may be holding back from surrendering to Jesus’ authority. Seek His guidance and submit to His teaching. Allow Him to be the Master and Teacher of your life.
John 20:16 reminds us of Jesus’ personal love for us and our need to recognize Him, surrender to Him, and cultivate an intimate relationship with Him.
