John 4:30
Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
John 4:30 (KJV)
Context
John 4:30 is part of the account of Jesus’ encounter with a Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar. In this chapter, Jesus reveals His identity as the Messiah and offers her living water, which symbolises eternal life. The verse occurs at the point where the woman, filled with excitement and curiosity, leaves her water jar and goes back to the city to tell the people about Jesus. The Samaritans’ response is immediate and corporate: they go out of the city and come to Him. This movement is a direct result of the woman’s simple testimony, showing that a personal encounter with Christ naturally leads to a desire to bring others to Him.
Meaning
The verse highlights the drawing power of Christ and the willingness of the Samaritans to respond. Their coming out of the city signifies a break from their previous routine and a step of faith toward the one they had heard about. The action is decisive: they do not merely listen to the woman’s report and stay where they are; they act upon it. This is a model for believers: hearing about Jesus should lead to seeking Him personally. The verse also shows Jesus waiting for those who would come to Him, ready to receive them.
Biblical connections
The Samaritans’ response stands in contrast to the initial skepticism and misunderstanding of the disciples (John 4:27, 31-33). This event foreshadows the broader inclusion of the Gentiles in the gospel, as the Samaritans, who were partially Jewish in heritage but held to a different worship tradition, are among the first to believe in Jesus as the Savior of the world (John 4:42). The woman’s testimony, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” (John 4:29, KJV), sparks curiosity and draws people to Jesus. Through her witness, many Samaritans come to believe in Jesus.
Application
Boldness in sharing: Like the Samaritan woman, we are called to share our encounter with Jesus and proclaim the Gospel boldly. Her example encourages us not to keep the good news to ourselves but to share it with others, regardless of our background or circumstances.
Faith in action: True faith in Jesus prompts us to action. We should be willing to leave behind our old ways and embrace a transformed life in Christ. This transformation should also inspire us to actively engage in evangelism and invite others to experience Jesus for themselves.
Recognising Jesus as the Messiah: The Samaritan woman’s recognition of Jesus as the Christ is crucial. Similarly, we need to have a personal revelation of who Jesus is and acknowledge Him as our Lord and Saviour. This understanding fuels our passion for sharing His love and salvation with others.
Reflection
The Samaritans’ response challenges us to examine our own faith. Do we merely hear about Jesus, or do we actively seek Him? Their willingness to leave their city and come to Him demonstrates that true faith is active; it moves toward Christ. As we encounter Jesus through His Word and the testimony of others, may we also respond by drawing near to Him and inviting others to do the same.
