Joshua 15:62

And Nibshan, and the city of Salt, and En–gedi; six cities with their villages.

Joshua 15:62 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the detailed record of the land given to the tribe of Judah after Israel entered the Promised Land. Joshua 15 lists the boundaries and cities of Judah’s inheritance. The verse names three of six cities in the wilderness district: Nibshan, the city of Salt, and En-gedi, with their villages. The other three cities appear in verse 61. This careful list shows that God’s promise to Abraham was fulfilled in a concrete, orderly way.

Nibshan appears only here in Scripture, and its exact location is unknown. It was likely a small settlement in the wilderness of Zin, southeast of Hebron. The city of Salt, from the Hebrew Ir-hamelach, probably lay near the southern Dead Sea, an area known for salt deposits. Salt was valuable for preserving food and for worship, but this place was barren and dry. En-gedi, meaning “spring of the goat,” was an oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea, famous for its fresh water and green plants. These three names together show that Judah’s inheritance included both desolate places and a fruitful spring.

En-gedi later became a refuge for David when he fled from King Saul. In 1 Samuel 24, David hid in the caves there and spared Saul’s life, showing mercy and trusting God to fulfill His promises. That event gives this small city a lasting spiritual meaning. The list of cities also connects to the broader truth that God gave Israel the land as He had sworn to their fathers. Even the most obscure places were part of His faithful provision.

God’s care is not limited to famous or impressive places. He recorded the names of small, forgotten towns, showing that every part of His people’s inheritance mattered. Believers today can trust that God sees and values the ordinary, difficult, or hidden parts of life. Just as Judah received a specific portion, each Christian has a place in God’s plan, even when it seems insignificant.

The verse invites gratitude for God’s faithfulness. He keeps His promises in detail, not just in general. The wilderness cities remind us that God provides even in dry seasons, and En-gedi shows that refreshment can appear in the desert. This passage encourages believers to trust God’s provision and to remain faithful in the place He has assigned, knowing that He honors every part of His people’s inheritance.
