Mark 6:35
And when the day was now far spent, his Disciples came vnto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is farre passed. Mark 6:35 (KJV)
“And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart, into a desert place, and rest awhile.”
Context: The passage is part of the narrative in the Gospel of Mark, where Jesus is ministering to large crowds, performing miracles, and teaching about the Kingdom of God. In this particular scene Jesus had been teaching the people all day, and it was getting late.
Recognition of the need: The disciples came to Jesus and acknowledged that they were in a deserted place and that the time was far passed. Their observation shows genuine concern for the people and a practical awareness of the need for food and shelter.
Jesus’ response: In the following verses (Mark 6:36‑44) Jesus performs the miracle of feeding the five thousand. He instructs the disciples to give the crowd something to eat, even though they initially question how such a large group could be fed.
A lesson in faith and provision: This passage teaches several important truths. First, Jesus is concerned about both our spiritual and physical needs; He cares for the whole person. Second, the disciples’ concern for practical needs was valid, yet they failed to recognize Jesus’ ability to provide. Third, Jesus can take our meager resources and multiply them to meet the needs of many. Fourth, the disciples needed to trust in Jesus’ power and provision even when the situation seemed impossible. Finally, the miracle points to Jesus as the Bread of Life, who satisfies the spiritual hunger of humanity.
Application:
Trust in God’s provision: Just as Jesus provided for the physical needs of the crowd, we can trust that God will provide for our needs as well. This does not mean we will never face challenges or scarcity, but it reminds us to have faith in His ability to meet our needs.
Recognise the needs around us: The disciples noticed the needs of the people and brought them to Jesus. We should cultivate a heart of compassion and be attentive to the physical and spiritual needs of others.
Step out in faith: The disciples obeyed Jesus’ command to give the crowd something to eat, even though they did not understand how it would be possible. Likewise, we are called to step out in faith when circumstances seem challenging or beyond our understanding.
