Mark 6:39

Posted on 18 May at 14:47

“And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.”

Context:Mark 6:39 is part of the larger narrative of Jesus feeding the five thousand. In the preceding verses, Jesus had compassion on the multitude, who were following Him, and had been teaching them throughout the day. As evening approached, the disciples suggested sending the crowd away to nearby villages to buy food. However, Jesus instructed His disciples to provide for the people.

Jesus’ authority and command:In this verse, Jesus takes charge and exercises His authority by commanding the disciples to organize the people into groups and have them sit down on the green grass. This directive demonstrates Jesus’ ability to take control of the situation and highlights His role as the leader.

Order and organization:Jesus’ command to have the people sit down by companies suggests a sense of order and organization. By dividing the large crowd into smaller groups, it became easier for the disciples to distribute the food that Jesus would miraculously multiply. This act teaches us the importance of orderliness and proper management in serving others effectively.

Symbolism and imagery:The mention of the green grass in this verse can be seen as symbolic. Green grass often represents fertility, abundance, and new life. It signifies the provision and blessings of God. Additionally, the image of people sitting on the grass reminds us of Jesus as the Good Shepherd, who provides nourishment for His sheep (the people).

Spiritual nourishment:The feeding of the five thousand is a miracle that points to Jesus as the ultimate provider of spiritual nourishment. Just as Jesus physically fed the crowd with a few loaves of bread and fish, He also offers Himself as the Bread of Life (John 6:35). This miracle foreshadows the sacrament of the Eucharist, where believers partake in the body and blood of Christ for their spiritual sustenance.

Lessons for discipleship:This verse also contains lessons for discipleship. Jesus entrusted His disciples with the task of organizing the crowd and distributing the food. It teaches us the importance of being obedient to Jesus’ commands, even when the task seems overwhelming or impossible. Furthermore, it highlights the disciples’ role as instruments through which God’s miracles can manifest.

God’s provision and abundance:The feeding of the five thousand is a powerful demonstration of God’s provision and abundance. With just a small amount of food, Jesus was able to satisfy the hunger of thousands of people. It reminds us that when we offer what little we have in service to God, He can multiply it and use it to bless many.
