Matthew 22:28
“Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.”
Context:To understand the context of this verse, it is helpful to examine the broader passage. In Matthew 22:23-33, the Sadducees approach Jesus with a hypothetical scenario about a woman who had been married to seven brothers, each of whom died in succession. The Sadducees posed a question about whose wife the woman would be in the resurrection.
Jesus begins His response by addressing their misconception. He says in Matthew 22:29-30 (KJV), “Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.”
Jesus explains that in the resurrection, marriage as we know it on Earth will not exist. People will not be given in marriage nor marry one another. Instead, they will be like angels in heaven. This response highlights a fundamental difference between life on Earth and eternal life in the presence of God.
The verse you mentioned, Matthew 22:28 (KJV), is the Sadducees’ question posed to Jesus. They present the scenario of a woman who had been married to seven brothers who all died, and they ask whose wife she would be in the resurrection. However, as Jesus makes clear in His response, the premise of their question is flawed because marriage will not exist in the same way in the resurrection.
