Matthew 24:26

Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

Context

This warning is part of the Olivet Discourse, the private teaching Jesus gave to His disciples on the Mount of Olives about the destruction of Jerusalem and the signs of His coming and the end of the age. In the preceding verse, Jesus had already told them that false Christs and false prophets would arise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the very elect. He then said, “Behold, I have told you before,” indicating that this warning was given in advance to protect His followers.

Meaning

In Matthew 24:26, Jesus presents two scenarios in which people may falsely claim to know where the Messiah is. The first is the report that He is in the desert, a secluded place where false messiahs might be expected to appear. The command “go not forth” warns against leaving one’s place to investigate such claims, lest one be stumbled or ensnared. The second is the claim that He is in the secret chambers, that is, hidden in a private room within a house. Here Jesus says plainly, “believe it not.” Both commands protect the disciples from being deceived by rumors that the Messiah’s presence is hidden or restricted to isolated locations.

The reason for this warning is found in the very next verse: the coming of the Son of Man will be as visible as lightning that comes out of the east and shines even unto the west. His return will not be a secret event but a public, unmistakable manifestation. Therefore, any claim that the Messiah is hidden in a remote or secret place is false by definition.
