Matthew 9:29

Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

Matthew 9:29 (KJV)

Two blind men followed Jesus, crying out for mercy and expressing their belief that He could heal them (Matthew 9:27-28). In response, Jesus touched their eyes and spoke the words recorded in Matthew 9:29.

The phrase “According to your faith be it unto you” reveals the connection between faith and the manifestation of God’s power. The blind men’s trust was not a human work that earned healing; rather, it was the God-given channel through which His power operated. The measure of their faith was met with a corresponding display of divine power. This verse does not teach that faith is a condition we fulfill to merit blessings, but that genuine faith opens the way for God’s gracious action.

Jesus’ physical touch also carries deep significance. He could have healed with a word alone, but He chose to touch their eyes, symbolizing compassion, personal care, and the transfer of spiritual power. This act accommodated their expectation of a manual operation and demonstrated His willingness to engage personally with those who come to Him in faith.

Opening the eyes of the blind was a prophetic sign of the Messiah’s coming (Isaiah 35:5). By healing these men, Jesus confirmed His messianic identity and His authority to bring restoration. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus commends individuals for their faith and responds to it with healing, showing that faith is consistently the means by which His power is received.

This verse encourages believers to approach God with expectant faith, knowing that He responds to genuine trust. The blind men’s persistence in following Jesus and their confession of His power provide a model for us. Yet the promise is “according to your faith,” not according to human desire or merit. This warns against presumption while inviting confident expectation in Christ’s sovereign action.

Jesus still meets those who cry out to Him with personal compassion. He does not merely pronounce a distant blessing; He draws near, touches our need, and speaks directly to our hearts. As we trust in Him as the Healer, we can rest in the assurance that He responds to faith according to His will and for His glory.
