Numbers 4:6

And shall put thereon the covering of badgers’ skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.

Numbers 4:6 (KJV)

In Numbers 4, God gives Moses detailed instructions for the Kohathite clan of Levites, who carried the tabernacle’s sacred objects during Israel’s wilderness journey. Before the Kohathites could move the Ark of the Covenant, Aaron and his sons had to prepare it. Verse 6 commands a covering of badgers’ skins, then a cloth wholly of blue, and finally the staves put in place. This covering was not the tabernacle covering assigned to the Gershonites (Numbers 4:25); it was a special protective layer for the Ark alone.

The badgers’ skins formed a durable outer shield, protecting the Ark from rain and dust. The blue cloth, spread over the skins, pointed to heavenly or divine realities, reminding Israel of God’s covenant presence. The staves were carrying poles that remained in place, ensuring the Ark was never touched directly by human hands. This practice highlighted the extreme holiness of the object and the reverence required of those who bore it.

The same pattern of covering sacred items with blue cloth and badgers’ skins appears for other tabernacle objects, such as the table of shewbread (Numbers 4:7-8) and the golden altar (Numbers 4:11). This consistent method shows God’s order and precision in worship, safeguarding every holy thing during transport.

Sanctity and reverence: The detailed care for the Ark teaches that holy things demand our utmost respect, both in physical objects and in spiritual matters.

Protection and preservation: The coverings remind believers to guard what is sacred in worship and personal devotion.

Divine presence: The blue cloth urges us to recognize and honour the covenant relationship we share with God.

Serving with humility: The staves illustrate that serving God involves humility, acknowledging that we are merely carriers of His presence and must act with reverence.

God’s instructions show that approaching Him requires careful preparation and a heart of awe. Just as the Kohathites depended on the priests to cover the Ark, we depend on God’s provision to approach Him rightly. Let us serve Him with the same reverence and order He demonstrated in the wilderness.
