Listen to this article

And they shall spread vpon them a clothe of scarlet, and couer the same with a couering of badgers skinnes, and shall put in the staues thereof. Numbers 4:8 (KJV)

The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In chapter 4, the Lord gives instructions to Moses concerning the duties of the Levites who were responsible for the tabernacle and its furnishings during their journey.

Numbers 4:8 focuses on the specific task assigned to the Kohathite branch of the Levites. They were responsible for carrying the most sacred objects of the tabernacle, such as the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altar of incense. However, before the Kohathites could carry these items, they had to be carefully covered and protected.

The first covering mentioned in the verse is a cloth of scarlet. Scarlet was a colour often associated with royalty and importance. It represented the preciousness and significance of the items being covered and symbolized the reverence and respect the Israelites were to have for the holy objects of the tabernacle.

The second covering mentioned is a covering of badgers’ skins. This was a durable and water‑resistant material. It served as a protective layer for the items being carried, emphasizing the care and responsibility entrusted to the Kohathites in safeguarding the sacred objects.

The staves mentioned in the verse were long poles used for carrying the covered objects. These staves were inserted into rings attached to the Ark of the Covenant and other furnishings, allowing the Levites to carry the items without directly touching them, maintaining their holiness.

The instructions given to the Kohathites highlight the importance of treating holy things with reverence. It teaches us to approach God and His sacred objects with awe, respect, and humility.

The badgers’ skins covering serves as a reminder that we have a responsibility to protect and preserve the things of God. It calls us to safeguard the integrity of God’s Word, His teachings, and His church from harm and corruption.

The Kohathites’ task was vital in ensuring the safe transportation of the tabernacle and its contents. Likewise, as followers of Christ, we have different roles and responsibilities within the body of believers. Each role is essential for the proper functioning and growth of the church.

The staves represent the means by which the sacred objects were carried. In a spiritual sense, they symbolize the support and assistance provided by God as we fulfill our assigned tasks. Just as the staves provided stability and strength for the Levites, we can rely on God’s strength and guidance to carry out our responsibilities.

In conclusion, Numbers 4:8 provides us with insights into the importance of reverence, protection, and responsibility in our relationship with God and His sacred things. It encourages us to approach God with awe and humility, to protect His truths, and to fulfill our roles in the body of Christ with diligence and reliance on His strength.
