Numbers 4:7
And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:
Numbers 4:7 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this verse, the Lord gives Moses specific instructions about the tabernacle and the duties of the Levites, particularly the Kohathites, who were responsible for carrying and caring for the sacred furniture.
Meaning
The “table of shewbread” was a table made of acacia wood overlaid with gold, standing on the north side of the Holy Place. On it, the priests placed twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The bread was replaced every Sabbath, and the old loaves were eaten by the priests.
The verse commands that a cloth of blue be spread upon the table, and on it be placed the dishes, spoons, bowls, and covers used with the table. The continual bread was to remain on the table. The blue cloth served to conceal the sacred items from the sight and touch of the Levites as they carried them, emphasizing the holiness of these objects and the need for reverence in handling what was dedicated to God.
The colour blue often represented heavenly or divine significance in the Bible, symbolising God’s authority, royalty, and the heavenly realm. The dishes, spoons, bowls, and covers were used to handle and contain the bread on the table. The phrase “continual bread” refers to the twelve loaves that were to be placed on the table, replaced every Sabbath, indicating a continual offering to God. This practice demonstrated the Israelites’ dependence on God as the provider of sustenance and their commitment to worship Him continually.
Biblical connections
The dishes, spoons, bowls, and covers mentioned here are the same items first described in Exodus 25:29, where the Lord instructed Moses to make these vessels for the table of shewbread. That earlier passage establishes the original purpose and design of these implements, which Numbers 4:7 later commands to be covered and carried during the tabernacle’s journey.
Application
As believers today, we can draw spiritual lessons from Numbers 4:7. We are reminded of the importance of recognising God as our provider and sustainer. Just as the priests cared for the bread on the table, we should cultivate a heart of gratitude and worship, continually offering our lives as a pleasing sacrifice to God. We can also reflect on the symbolism of the blue cloth, understanding that our worship and fellowship with God should be founded on the recognition of His divine nature and authority.
The covering and careful handling of the table and its vessels illustrate the principle that God’s holy things must be treated with utmost respect and care, a truth that carries over into the Christian life as believers are called to honour what is sacred to God.
