Proverbs 15:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

Without counsell, purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellours they are established. Proverbs 15:22 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and practical advice attributed to King Solomon, whose reputation for wisdom frames the teaching of this verse. Proverbs 15:22 underscores the necessity of seeking counsel before making decisions.

Seeking Counsel – The verse begins by stressing the importance of obtaining advice. It points out that without wise counsel our purposes or plans may be disappointed, implying that reliance on our own understanding alone can lead to failure or undesirable outcomes.

Multitude of Counselors – The passage further highlights the benefit of consulting multiple advisors. By drawing on the input of several wise and experienced individuals, we increase the likelihood of making well‑informed choices. A diversity of perspectives broadens our understanding of the situation at hand.

Establishing Purposes – With the guidance of a multitude of counselors, our purposes become established. This suggests that counsel helps solidify plans, making them more secure and reliable. The collective wisdom and varied viewpoints of counselors provide a stronger foundation for our decisions and actions.

Application – Proverbs 15:22 encourages us to value the input of others, especially those who are wise and experienced. Seeking counsel is not a sign of weakness but a prudent, wise approach. Whether in personal matters, professional decisions, or spiritual guidance, involving others can lead to better choices and help us avoid potential pitfalls.

Biblical Examples – Scripture offers numerous illustrations of the principle. Moses sought counsel from his father‑in‑law Jethro (Exodus 18:13‑26). David sought assistance from the priest Ahimelech (1 Samuel 21:1‑9) and also consulted the priest Abiathar (1 Samuel 23:2‑4). King Rehoboam consulted the elders (1 Kings 12:1‑15). These accounts demonstrate the positive outcomes that result from wise counsel and the negative consequences that can arise when it is ignored.

In conclusion, Proverbs 15:22 teaches that seeking counsel before deciding is essential. The verse affirms that the input of multiple counselors establishes our purposes, leading to greater success and preventing disappointment. By considering the wisdom and perspectives of those around us, we can make wiser choices and experience better outcomes in all areas of life.
