Proverbs 15:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!”

Context:The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings that provide practical guidance for daily living. It is primarily attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom and insight. Proverbs 15:23 is part of a larger section in which Solomon contrasts the effects of wise and foolish speech. This verse highlights the power and impact of words spoken at the right time.

Joy through Words:The verse begins by stating that a person experiences joy through the answer of their mouth. This implies that when we respond wisely and appropriately, our words can bring joy both to ourselves and to others. Our ability to communicate effectively is a precious gift from God, and when we use it wisely, it can produce positive outcomes.

Words Spoken in Due Season:The second part of the verse emphasizes the importance of speaking a word in due season. “Due season” refers to the right time or appropriate moment. It suggests that timing is crucial when it comes to our words. When we speak at the right time, our words have a greater impact and are received more favourably.

The Power of Timely Words:The verse concludes by highlighting the goodness of a word spoken in due season. When we speak the right word at the right time, it can bring comfort, encouragement, and guidance. It can uplift the spirits of those who hear it and provide the necessary wisdom or reassurance they need in that moment. Timely words have the potential to make a significant positive difference in the lives of others.

Application:

  • Wise Communication:This verse reminds us of the importance of using wisdom in our speech. It encourages us to think before we speak, considering the timing, context, and impact our words may have on others.
  • Encouragement and Support:We should strive to speak words of encouragement, comfort, and guidance to those around us. By doing so, we can bring joy and positively influence the lives of others.
  • Sensitivity to Others:Pay attention to the needs and circumstances of others, seeking opportunities to offer timely words of wisdom, comfort, or guidance. Be attentive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, who can guide us in speaking the right words at the right time.
