Proverbs 15:21
Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.
Proverbs 15:21 (KJV)
Context
This proverb comes from the wisdom collection of Solomon. It sets two kinds of people side by side: one who lacks wisdom and one who has understanding. In Hebrew, the phrase “destitute of wisdom” can also mean “lacking a heart,” because the heart was seen as the seat of thought and moral choice. This shows that folly is not just a mental mistake; it is a failure of the whole inner person.
Meaning
The verse says that “Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom.” Folly means foolishness or poor judgment. Such a person finds pleasure in unwise behavior, often seeking quick satisfaction without thinking about the results. This joy does not last and leads to harm. In fact, folly is closely tied to sin, for all sin is a form of foolishness. The wicked person not only commits sin but also delights in it and even enjoys seeing others do the same.
In contrast, “a man of understanding walketh uprightly.” Understanding is more than knowledge; it is the ability to apply truth to daily life. This person walks a straight and honest path, making choices that honor God. His wisdom shapes his actions, so his life is consistent and righteous. The upright walk is not a single decision but a steady way of living.
Biblical connections
Proverbs 10:23 makes a similar point, showing that foolishness treats sin as entertainment. Both verses reveal that the one who lacks wisdom finds joy in what is wrong, while the person of understanding chooses a different path. This contrast runs throughout Proverbs, urging readers to choose the path of wisdom.
Application
This verse calls us to examine what brings us joy. Do we laugh at foolish choices or take pleasure in them? We are invited to turn to God and His Word, asking for a wise heart. When we value understanding, our daily decisions begin to reflect uprightness. We can ask God to give us a heart that finds joy in what is good and true.
Reflection
True joy is not found in folly but in walking with God. The path of understanding may seem harder, but it leads to a life of integrity and peace. Let us choose wisdom, so that our walk matches the heart God desires. In this way, our joy becomes lasting and our lives honor Him.
