Proverbs 15:24

The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

Proverbs 15:24 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the book of Proverbs, a collection of wise sayings traditionally linked to King Solomon. Proverbs teaches practical wisdom for daily life, showing how the fear of the Lord shapes a person’s choices. The verse contrasts two paths: one that leads upward to life, and another that descends toward death. This contrast is central to the book’s message.

The phrase “the way of life” describes a manner of living that follows God’s principles. It is not merely a set of rules but a whole direction of heart and conduct. This way is “above to the wise,” meaning that wise people see it clearly and walk in it. Their wisdom comes from reverencing God, as Proverbs 1:7 teaches. Because they follow this upward path, they “depart from hell beneath.” Here “hell” refers to Sheol, the Old Testament word for the grave or the place of the dead. The wise person avoids the destruction that comes to the wicked. The upward direction is not accidental; it is a deliberate contrast with the downward descent of the wicked. Wisdom is practical, directing one’s steps away from death and toward life.

The upward direction of the wise person’s path contrasts with the downward descent of the wicked. This theme appears throughout Scripture. In the New Testament, Jesus calls Himself the way to life, and those who follow Him pass from death to life. The verse points to a truth that runs through the whole Bible: wisdom leads to life, while folly leads to death. The life that the wise pursue is hidden with Christ in God, as the New Testament teaches. This connection shows that the path of wisdom ultimately leads to eternal life with God.

Seek wisdom daily by reading Scripture and asking God for guidance. Choose the way of life deliberately, aligning your decisions with God’s commands. Avoid the path of wickedness, remembering that it brings serious consequences. Trust that God directs the steps of those who submit to Him, as Proverbs 3:5-6 promises. Make choices that reflect God’s truth, and you will experience the blessings of the upward path. In this way, you will be kept from the snares of death.

Consider your own direction. Are you walking the upward path of wisdom, or are you drifting toward the way of death? The wise person does not stumble into life by accident; he or she makes deliberate choices to follow God. Let this verse encourage you to pursue wisdom with your whole heart, knowing that it leads to life and keeps you from destruction. Each day offers a chance to walk the upward way.
