Proverbs 28:20

Listen to this article

“A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. The book contains practical and moral teachings for everyday life, emphasizing the fear of the Lord, the pursuit of wisdom, and righteous living.

The faithfulness of a person:The verse begins by highlighting the virtue of faithfulness. A faithful person is someone who is trustworthy, loyal, and steadfast. This refers to a person’s character and integrity in fulfilling their commitments and responsibilities, both towards God and others.

Abound with blessings:The verse states that a faithful person will “abound with blessings.” This implies that those who demonstrate faithfulness will experience God’s favour, provision, and abundance in their lives. These blessings can encompass various aspects, including spiritual, emotional, relational, and material blessings.

The danger of hasty pursuit of wealth:The second part of the verse cautions against a particular mindset-making haste to be rich. This warns against an impatient and unscrupulous pursuit of wealth, driven by greed and a desire for quick and easy gain.

The loss of innocence:The verse declares that those who hastily chase after wealth will “not be innocent.” This implies that such individuals may resort to dishonest or unethical means to achieve their financial goals. Their actions may lead to a compromise of their moral integrity, damaging their character and ultimately affecting their relationship with God.

Lessons for believers:This verse offers several lessons for believers:

  • a. Faithfulness brings blessings: The verse affirms that faithfulness is rewarded by God. As believers, we should strive to be faithful in all areas of life, including our relationships, responsibilities, and service to God. God delights in faithfulness and promises to bless those who demonstrate it.
  • b. Patience and integrity in wealth acquisition: The verse warns against a hasty and unethical pursuit of wealth. As Christians, our pursuit of wealth and success should be guided by principles of integrity, honesty, and godly wisdom. We should prioritise our relationship with God and the well-being of others above personal gain.
  • c. The value of innocence and moral character: The verse reminds us of the importance of maintaining our innocence and moral character. Our integrity and righteousness before God should not be compromised for the sake of worldly wealth. Our ultimate goal should be to honour God and live in accordance with His commands.
  • d. Trusting in God’s provision: The verse encourages believers to trust in God’s provision rather than relying solely on their own efforts. By remaining faithful to God and His principles, we can have confidence that He will bless us abundantly according to His perfect timing and plan.

In summary, Proverbs 28:20 emphasises the value of faithfulness and the dangers of hasty pursuit of wealth. It encourages believers to prioritise integrity, trust in God’s provision, and seek His blessings through righteous living.
