Proverbs 3:16

Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

Proverbs 3:16 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon, who was known for his wisdom and understanding. Its purpose is to impart practical wisdom and guidance for righteous living. In Proverbs 3:16, wisdom is personified as a woman, and the verse emphasizes the benefits and blessings that come from embracing her.

In this verse, wisdom holds three important gifts. “Length of days” refers to long life or a life of fulfilment and satisfaction. Wisdom leads to a life that is well-lived, with a sense of purpose, and the ability to make wise choices that contribute to longevity and well-being. The term “riches” here refers not only to material wealth but also encompasses abundance, blessings, and prosperity in various aspects of life. Wisdom leads to the acquisition of valuable insights, discernment, and practical knowledge, which can result in success and prosperity. “Honour” signifies reputation, respect, and a good name. Wisdom guides individuals in living with integrity, making honourable decisions, and conducting themselves in ways that gain respect and esteem from others.

The imagery of wisdom holding these blessings in her hands underscores that she is the source of true well-being and prosperity. In biblical culture, the right hand often symbolizes power, honour, and favour, while the left hand may represent secondary blessings. The verse presents these gifts as the general fruit of a wise life, not as an absolute guarantee for every individual in every circumstance.

This verse should be understood in the context of Proverbs as a whole, where wisdom is not merely intellectual but is rooted in the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10). The blessings of wisdom are not to be pursued as ends in themselves but as byproducts of a life devoted to God. The New Testament affirms that Christ is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), and in Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3), so the blessings of wisdom are ultimately found in a relationship with Christ.

The verse highlights the importance of seeking and embracing wisdom. Wisdom is not just intellectual knowledge but also understanding and applying God’s principles in our lives. As we pursue wisdom, we align ourselves with God’s truth and experience the benefits that come from walking in His ways. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, so seek to develop a reverential relationship with God.

Wisdom leads to a life characterized by godly principles and prudent choices. When we make wise decisions, taking into account God’s guidance, we position ourselves for a life of fulfilment, contentment, and even physical health. Wisdom helps us navigate challenges and make choices that contribute to our overall well-being. In your daily life, seek to make decisions based on godly wisdom, considering the long-term consequences of your actions and choosing what aligns with God’s truth and principles (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Notice that wisdom holds both “length of days” and “riches and honour” in her hands. This indicates the importance of seeking a balanced life. While it is good to pursue success and prosperity, we must not neglect the importance of character, integrity, and the well-being of our souls. Wisdom guides us in maintaining a healthy balance between our pursuit of worldly achievements and our spiritual growth. Strive for a life that is well-rounded, pursuing both spiritual growth and practical success, remembering that true riches and honour come from living according to God’s ways, not just from material wealth or worldly recognition.

As you grow in wisdom, be willing to share the insights and understanding you have gained with others. Live in a way that reflects God’s wisdom, and let your actions and words be a testimony of His goodness and truth. The believer is called to seek wisdom for its own sake, trusting that God will provide what is best, whether that includes long life, riches, or honour, or not. Prioritize the pursuit of godly wisdom through prayer, study of Scripture, and obedience, knowing that such a life is ultimately the most blessed and fulfilling, regardless of earthly outcomes.
