Proverbs 5:7

Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

Context

Proverbs 5 warns against the dangers of adultery and the seductive speech of the immoral woman. The speaker, traditionally King Solomon, addresses his hearers as “children,” meaning young and inexperienced people who still need guidance. The word “therefore” connects this verse to earlier warnings about the bitter end of those who ignore wisdom. This verse is a turning point: the father calls his children to pay close attention before he describes the paths of the adulterous woman in the following verses.

Meaning

The command “Hear me now therefore” is more than a request to listen. In Hebrew thought, hearing includes obeying. The father wants his children to receive his words with a teachable heart and to act on them. The phrase “O ye children” shows that this instruction is for those who are still learning, but the wisdom applies to every age. “Depart not from the words of my mouth” means do not turn aside from the counsel just given. The father’s words are not ordinary advice; they are life-giving truth that must be kept close.

Biblical connections

This call to hear and obey echoes the great command in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, where Israel is told to hear the Lord and love Him with all the heart. In both places, hearing is tied to covenant faithfulness. For the Christian, this call finds its fulfillment in Christ, who is the wisdom of God. The warning against the adulterous woman applies to any lure that draws the heart away from God. Wisdom is available, but it must be chosen. The verse calls for a decision: to listen and obey or to turn away. Ignoring wisdom leads to ruin, while heeding it leads to life. Every believer is a child in need of the Father’s instruction. The question is whether we will hold fast to His words or let them slip. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts and to renew our commitment to follow God’s voice above all others.
