Proverbs 9:6

Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Context

Proverbs 9 pictures wisdom and folly as two women, each inviting people to a feast. Wisdom has built her house and prepared her table, calling the simple to leave their naive ways. Folly also calls out, but her food is stolen and her path leads to death. Verse 6 is the heart of Wisdom’s invitation: forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. This is a direct command to choose between two very different paths.

Meaning

The word “forsake” is strong. It means to abandon completely, not merely to avoid for a while. The “foolish” in Proverbs are not unintelligent people. They are those who live by selfish desires and refuse to honor God’s instruction. They mock wisdom and despise correction. To forsake the foolish is to turn away from that whole way of thinking and living. The promise attached is simple and profound: “and live.” In Proverbs, life is more than breathing; it is a full, blessed, and secure life that comes from walking with God. The second command, “go in the way of understanding,” shows this is not just a negative turning away. It is a positive, active journey. Understanding means practical skill in living according to God’s truth. It is not passive knowledge but a path to walk daily.
