Psalms 104:7

At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.

Psalms 104:7 (KJV)

Psalm 104 is a hymn of praise celebrating God as Creator and Sustainer. This verse sits within a section describing God’s sovereign control over the waters at creation. Earlier in the psalm, the waters covered the earth like a garment. Here, the psalmist pictures them fleeing at God’s rebuke and the voice of His thunder.

The verse begins with the words, “At thy rebuke they fled.” The word “they” refers to the waters or seas. The psalmist portrays the waters as responding quickly to God’s command, retreating in haste. This emphasizes God’s absolute authority over the natural elements. The second part, “at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away,” uses thunder as a picture of God’s powerful voice. Thunder is loud and awe-inspiring, capable of evoking fear. The waters hurry to obey, showing that God’s mere word carries complete power.

This imagery recalls Genesis 1:9, where God commands the waters to gather into one place so dry land appears. The following verses in Psalm 104 show the waters retreating to their appointed place and being bound by a decree so they never again cover the earth. This reinforces God’s ongoing governance of creation. The New Testament reveals that all things were created through Christ and hold together in Him (Colossians 1:16-17). The same divine word that rebuked the waters is embodied in Christ, who stills storms and commands creation.

This verse calls believers to awe and trust in the God who rules all things by His voice. If the waters obey His rebuke, He is fully able to bring order out of chaos in our lives. We can face difficult circumstances with confidence, knowing that God’s power is not limited to the past but continues to sustain and govern creation today.

Consider the majesty of a God whose word controls the seas. Let this truth inspire gratitude for His ongoing care and provision. When life feels overwhelming, remember that the same voice that stilled the waters speaks peace to His people.
