Psalms 105:11

Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:

Psalms 105:11 (KJV)

Psalm 105 is a hymn of praise that reflects on God’s steadfast faithfulness to Israel. It recounts the history of God’s covenant with Abraham and the fulfillment of His promises. The promise recorded in Psalm 105:11 was given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to their descendants, the children of Israel. The word “saying” indicates that this earthly promise was pronounced when the everlasting covenant was given, as recorded in Genesis 17:7-8, where God promises to be their God and to give them the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession.

The phrase “the lot of your inheritance” emphasizes that the land was a divinely apportioned inheritance, not a possession earned by human merit. The same words are echoed in 1 Chronicles 16:18, where they appear in a psalm of thanksgiving. The land of Canaan was a land prepared and ready, furnished with houses, fields, and vineyards, symbolizing a gracious provision. The promise was made when the patriarchs were few and strangers in the land, highlighting that God’s faithfulness does not depend on human circumstances. The verse underscores God’s sovereign right to give the land to whom He pleases, and the expulsion of the Canaanites was justified by their wickedness.

Beyond its historical significance, the verse carries spiritual application for believers today. The New Testament presents the land of Canaan as a type of the spiritual blessings received in Christ. As Galatians 3:29 affirms, Christians are heirs of the promises made to Abraham through faith in Jesus, inheriting not only a physical territory but a spiritual inheritance that includes salvation, eternal life, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the blessings of God’s kingdom.

As the Israelites faced difficulties and battles before possessing the land, so believers pass through the wilderness of this world, enduring tribulations and fighting the good fight of faith before entering the promised rest. This earthly promise is seen as typical of the heavenly inheritance, a kingdom prepared by God the Father through the presence and mediation of His Son. Thus Psalm 105:11 reminds us of God’s unwavering faithfulness in keeping His covenant and invites us to trust Him, seek His presence, and recognize our inheritance in Him as we walk in faith.
