Psalms 105:20

Posted on 18 May at 15:14

“The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free.”

Context:Psalm 105 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving, recounting the faithfulness of God to the nation of Israel throughout their history. This particular verse is part of a section that focuses on the story of Joseph.

Joseph’s Story:In the book of Genesis (chapters 37-50), the narrative of Joseph unfolds. He was one of Jacob’s twelve sons, and his brothers sold him into slavery out of jealousy. Joseph endured various trials, including imprisonment, but ultimately rose to a position of great influence in Egypt. Through God’s guidance, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams, leading to his appointment as a ruler in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself.

Liberation by the King:In Psalm 105:20, the verse speaks of the king sending for Joseph and setting him free. This refers to the moment when Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, recognised Joseph’s wisdom and ability and elevated him to a position of authority. Pharaoh granted Joseph his freedom and placed him in a position where he could fulfil God’s plan to preserve the people of Israel during a severe famine.

Symbolic Representation:While the immediate context refers to the historical account of Joseph’s release from prison and his subsequent rise to power, this verse also holds a broader symbolic meaning. It represents God’s faithfulness and His ability to lift His people from difficult circumstances, turning their situation around and granting them freedom, favour, and influence.

Application:Psalm 105:20 reminds believers of God’s sovereignty and His power to intervene in our lives. It encourages us to trust in God’s providence, even when we face challenges and adversity. Just as God liberated Joseph and fulfilled His purposes through him, He can work in our lives to bring about redemption and blessings.

  • Gratitude and Praise:The overall theme of Psalm 105 is gratitude and praise for God’s faithfulness. As we reflect on Joseph’s story and God’s deliverance, we are prompted to offer thanksgiving to God for His constant presence and provision in our lives.
