Psalms 105:23

Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

Psalms 105:23 (KJV)

Psalm 105 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving that recounts the history of Israel from their ancestor Abraham to their deliverance from Egypt and establishment in the Promised Land. It emphasises God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His chosen people.

This verse marks the moment when Jacob, also called Israel, and his family entered Egypt during a severe famine. The name “Israel” refers to Jacob, who received this name after wrestling with God. The word “sojourned” indicates that Jacob lived as a foreigner, not a permanent resident, emphasising the temporary nature of Israel’s stay in Egypt. The “land of Ham” is another name for Egypt, reflecting its association with Ham, one of the sons of Noah and the ancestor of various African nations.

The verse acknowledges the fulfilment of God’s promise to bring the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob into Egypt. This was a pivotal event in the history of the Israelites, as it set the stage for their eventual deliverance from slavery and their journey to the Promised Land. This event is directly connected to the story of Joseph in Genesis 37, where Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, rose to prominence in Egypt and prepared for his family’s arrival.

Psalm 105:23 highlights God’s sovereignty and covenant faithfulness in orchestrating these events for His people’s good. The verse underscores that God was at work in the details of Jacob’s family history, fulfilling His promises even through difficult circumstances.

This verse reminds us of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the challenges and trials that Jacob and his descendants faced during their time in Egypt, God remained faithful to His covenant and ultimately delivered them. Just as God was with Jacob and the Israelites in their sojourn in Egypt, He is with us in our journeys and challenges today.

This verse also encourages us to reflect on the historical context and events of the Bible, deepening our understanding of God’s redemptive plan and His faithfulness to His people throughout history. Recognising and remembering God’s providence and guidance in our own lives helps us trust Him in every season.

Consider how God has been faithful in your own journey, even when the path seemed uncertain. Just as Jacob’s sojourn in Egypt was part of a larger plan, your current circumstances are held within God’s faithful purposes.
