Psalms 109:18
As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
Psalms 109:18 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 109 is attributed to David and is an imprecatory psalm, a prayer asking God to judge his enemies. In this verse, David describes a wicked man who made cursing part of his daily life. The man wore cursing like a garment, meaning his harmful words were visible to everyone, and he took pride in them as if they were an ornament.
Meaning
The clothing imagery shows how deeply the enemy embraced his sin. Just as a garment covers the body, cursing covered his character and actions. The Syriac version even renders it as armour, suggesting he saw it as protection. David prays that this same cursing would enter the man’s bowels like water and his bones like oil. Water and oil penetrate deeply and spread throughout, so the curse would fill his entire being. This is a prayer for justice: the harm the enemy wished on others would come back upon him completely, from the inside out.
Biblical connections
This verse reflects the principle that people reap what they sow. The enemy’s own words and deeds become the measure of his punishment. In the New Testament, Jesus teaches a higher way for believers: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). While the psalmist cries out for justice, Christians are called to trust God’s final judgment and respond with forgiveness.
Application
This verse warns that persistent malice and cursing are not harmless. They reveal a heart that is far from God and bring serious consequences. Believers should examine their own speech, asking God to purify their words and attitudes. When wronged, they can bring their pain to God in prayer, but they must leave vengeance in His hands.
Reflection
God sees every curse and every act of wickedness. He is just and will not ignore sin. Yet He also offers mercy through Christ, who took the curse of sin upon Himself. Those who trust in Him can be freed from the power of cursing and learn to speak words of blessing instead.
