Psalms 114:8

Context
Psalm 114 is a short song that celebrates God’s power and presence during the exodus of Israel from Egypt. The people traveled through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. Verse 8 closes the psalm by recalling a specific miracle: God gave water from rock and flint.
Meaning
The words “rock” and “flint” describe hard, dry, and lifeless stone. Flint is especially dense and tough. Yet God “turned the rock into a standing water” and “the flint into a fountain of waters.” This means He changed something impossible into a lasting supply. The water was not a brief trickle but a standing pool and a flowing fountain, enough for the whole community. This miracle shows God’s absolute authority over nature and His faithfulness to provide for His people even in barren places.
Biblical connections
This verse points back to two events. At Rephidim, Moses struck the rock at Horeb, and water came out for the thirsty people (Exodus 17:1-7). Later, at Kadesh, God again provided water from the rock (Numbers 20:11). The psalm also echoes the memory that water followed Israel in the wilderness (Psalm 78:15-16; 105:41). The apostle Paul explains that the rock was a picture of Christ, who gives spiritual life and refreshment (1 Corinthians 10:4). Christ is the fountain of living waters, from whom believers receive grace upon grace as they journey through the wilderness of this world toward the promised rest.
Application
God still works in impossible situations. When life feels dry and hard, He can bring refreshment and hope. The same power that split the rock can meet our needs today. We can trust Him to provide, even when no human solution is visible. This encourages trust in God’s power to meet needs in impossible situations and points to the sufficiency of Christ for all spiritual needs.
Reflection
This verse calls us to stand in awe of the Lord, the God of Jacob. He alone can bring life from what seems dead and water from what seems dry. Christ is the fountain of living waters, and in Him believers find grace for every wilderness journey.
