Psalms 118:5

I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place.

Context

Psalm 118 is a hymn of thanksgiving that celebrates the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness. It is the final psalm in the Hallel collection, Psalms 113 through 118, which Jewish people traditionally recited during feasts such as Passover. The psalmist speaks from personal experience, giving thanks for deliverance that the whole community can join.

Meaning

The Hebrew word for “distress” means narrowness or a tight place. The psalmist felt trapped, with no room to move. In that condition, he did not rely on his own strength. He called upon the Lord. The Lord answered him and set him in a large place, a spacious and free position. This contrast between narrowness and breadth shows the complete change God brought.

The Lord’s response is twofold. He heard the cry, and He acted to rescue. The large place is more than physical safety. It represents relief, freedom, and room to live again. The psalmist testifies that God turned his confinement into openness.

Biblical connections

This same picture of God bringing someone out of distress into a broad place appears in Psalm 18:19 and Psalm 31:8. In each case, God’s deliverance is personal and complete. The psalmist’s experience also points forward to the Messiah, who prayed in agony in Gethsemane and was vindicated through resurrection and exaltation to heaven, the greatest large place of all.

Application

Believers can follow the psalmist’s example. When trouble feels like a narrow trap, the first response is to call upon the Lord. He is attentive to the cries of His people and willing to answer. This verse assures us that God hears and that His help can bring freedom beyond our immediate problem.

God’s deliverance often brings more than relief. It can open new opportunities, restore peace, and create room for spiritual growth. The large place may be a changed heart, a reconciled relationship, or a new season of service. Trusting God in distress means believing that He can make room where there seemed to be none.

When you are in a tight place, do you turn to the Lord first? The psalmist’s testimony invites you to remember that God answers those who call on Him. His faithfulness does not depend on the size of your trouble. He who set the psalmist in a large place can do the same for you, bringing liberty and hope in His perfect time.
