Context
Psalm 118 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s steadfast love and enduring mercy. It belongs to the Egyptian Hallel, a group of psalms (Psalms 113–118) sung at Passover and other festivals. The psalmist speaks with confidence in the Lord’s protection, even when surrounded by enemies. This verse sits within a procession of praise, where the people remember how God delivered them from distress. The whole psalm celebrates God’s faithful care, which never fails.
Meaning
The phrase “The LORD is on my side” means God actively supports and defends the psalmist. Because the Lord stands with him, he declares, “I will not fear.” The question “what can man do unto me?” is rhetorical. It does not deny that people can cause harm, but it measures human power against God’s sovereign care. No human threat can finally prevail against those whom God protects.
