Psalms 119:40

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.”

1. Context: Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, consisting of 176 verses. It is an acrostic poem divided into twenty-two stanzas, each beginning with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalmist expresses his deep love and devotion for God’s law and the importance of following His commandments.

In Psalm 119:40, the psalmist declares his intense desire for God’s precepts. The word “precepts” refers to God’s instructions, teachings, or commandments. The psalmist recognizes the value and significance of God’s Word and acknowledges that he has a deep longing to follow and understand it.

This verse reflects the psalmist’s devotion to God’s ways, highlighting his eagerness to embrace and obey God’s commandments. It expresses a sincere desire for spiritual growth, knowledge, and a closer relationship with God.

2. Longing for God’s Precepts: The psalmist also prays for God to “quicken” him in His righteousness. The term “quicken” means to revive, enliven, or bring to life. Here, the psalmist is asking God to breathe new life into him, particularly in the context of God’s righteousness.

By requesting to be quickened in God’s righteousness, the psalmist seeks spiritual renewal and restoration. He desires to be aligned with God’s standards of righteousness and holiness. It’s a plea for God to grant him the strength and grace to live according to His ways, enabling him to walk in righteousness and integrity.

3. Quicken Me in Your Righteousness: As believers, we can learn from the psalmist’s deep longing for God’s precepts. We should cultivate a hunger and thirst for God’s Word, recognizing its value as our guide for living a godly life. We can develop this longing through regular Bible study, meditation, and prayer, allowing God’s Word to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

  • a. Longing for God’s Word: Like the psalmist, we can pray for God to quicken us in His righteousness. We should seek His help and guidance to live a righteous and holy life. This involves acknowledging our need for God’s grace and relying on His power to transform us from within. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, God can renew our hearts, revive our spirits, and empower us to walk in obedience to His commandments.
  • b. Seeking Spiritual Renewal: By desiring to be quickened in God’s righteousness, we commit to living according to His standards rather than the world’s values. This requires a deliberate choice to follow God’s Word, even when it contradicts the prevailing cultural norms. We should strive for integrity, justice, and righteousness in all areas of our lives, seeking to reflect God’s character to those around us.
  • c. Embracing God’s Standards: We should cultivate a hunger and thirst for God’s Word, recognizing its value as our guide for living a godly life.
