Psalms 119:73

Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

Psalms 119:73 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the book of Psalms, and it is known for its deep love for God’s Word. The chapter is arranged in twenty-two sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This verse belongs to the tenth section, called JOD. Each verse in that section begins with the same Hebrew letter, showing careful structure and meditation.

The psalmist begins by acknowledging that God’s hands have made and fashioned him. This is more than a statement about creation. It is a confession that God is sovereign over his life and knows him completely. Because God formed him, God also understands what he needs. The psalmist then asks for understanding, not for its own sake, but so that he may learn God’s commandments. He does not trust his own mind to grasp divine truth. He depends on God to open his heart and teach him.

This prayer connects God’s work as Creator with His role as Teacher. The same God who shaped the psalmist’s body can shape his mind and spirit. Throughout Psalm 119, the writer repeatedly asks for insight to keep God’s law. This verse grounds that request in the intimate relationship between the Maker and the one He made. Because God formed him, the psalmist is confident that God will also give him the wisdom he needs.

Believers today can pray this verse with the same humility. We did not create ourselves, and we cannot understand God’s ways by our own effort. When we read Scripture, we should first acknowledge that God made us and knows us. Then we can ask Him to give us understanding, so that we may obey His commandments. This prayer keeps us dependent on God, not on our own intelligence.

God’s commandments are not burdensome rules. They are guidance from the One who formed us. When we ask for understanding, we are asking to know the purpose for which we were made. The psalmist’s request shows that true learning begins with humility before the Creator. He is both our Maker and our Teacher, and He is ready to give wisdom to those who ask.
