Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

Context

Psalm 120 opens the collection known as the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These songs were likely used by Israelites traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. They express prayer, trust, and hope during the journey. This psalm begins with a personal cry for help, and verse 2 is the heart of that plea.

The psalmist feels endangered by false speech. He asks the Lord to rescue his very life, not just his reputation. The words “lying lips” and “deceitful tongue” are parallel, showing how deeply deception threatens him. The rest of the psalm describes living among people who hate peace (Psalm 120:5-7), so this prayer is not abstract. It rises from real conflict and danger.

Meaning

The phrase “Deliver my soul” means more than emotional relief. In Hebrew thought, the soul represents the whole person, including life itself. The psalmist is asking God to save him from harm caused by liars. He does not try to defend himself or take revenge. Instead, he turns directly to the Lord, acknowledging that only God can truly protect him.

The parallel between “lying lips” and “deceitful tongue” emphasizes the destructive power of words. Falsehood can ruin trust, break relationships, and even threaten safety. The psalmist longs for truth and integrity, both in his own life and in the world around him. His prayer shows that it is right to bring such distress to God honestly and urgently.

Biblical connections

This verse connects with the broader teaching of Scripture about the power of speech. Proverbs repeatedly warns against lying and commends truthful lips (Proverbs 12:19). Application

Like the psalmist, believers can bring their distress over lies and deceit directly to God in prayer. He hears and is able to rescue. This verse also calls for personal truthfulness. The one who prays against lying lips must avoid lying themselves. Integrity begins with our own words.

Christians should also guard their speech, using words to build up rather than deceive. When falsehood surrounds us, we can trust God’s protection and continue walking faithfully toward Him.
